University of Virginia Baseball Program
New Recruit Mentor Program
Coach O'Connor has asked that a mentorship program be developed for those players that are new to college baseball. This is a new program for the University of Virginia, but an unofficial program is already in place. I was able to meet with a rising senior and very well respected member of the returning team, Jared King. Jared felt it was very important to not usurp the coaches authority or try to teach the new recruits anything that normally would be taught by the coaches. Jared felt that it would be very helpful to try to teach the recruits about college life. Thus, reducing their stress level and making it easier for them to focus on baseball. However, the more we talked, Jared starting thinking of more and more things that he thought would be beneficial to the recruits so they would be able to more rapidly adapt to being part of the baseball program. The following is the initial draft of what the mentorship program should entail. However, due to the busy schedule of Coach O'Connor, the final draft has not been done. The final draft will be worked on and completed prior to the arrival of the students and their induction into the UVA baseball program.

This is a manual that has been created to help you acclimate to your new team and surroundings. The expectations that are being put upon you by your teammates, coaches University and the fans are high. This is for good reason and the expectations you put upon yourself should be at least equally as high.
In the early stages of being welcomed into this proud and storied program you will be paired with an upper classman mentor. This will be a seasoned member of the team that has been in the exact same position you are currently in. He will be your main point of contact for any questions you may have about Grounds, classes, transportation, the baseball facility, team rules and many other relevant topics.
After each player is paired with a Mentor, there will be various meetings that will be required. The Mentors will cover a variety of topics, but the following list covers some of the topics that have been deemed important:
Punctuality
Drinking Age
Classes
Representing self/UVA Baseball/Community
