Head Coach: Brian O'Connor
Associate Head Coach: Kevin McMullan
Assistant Coaches: Karl Kuhn and Matt Kirby
Baseball Administration: Billy Messer
Athletic Trainer: Brian McGuire
The University of Virginia Baseball Program is one of the premier programs in all of college sports. The program has grown exponentially since the arrival of Coach O'Connor. Many elements go into having a consistent winning program. My goal is to learn what these elements are. Just recruiting talent is not enough. There has to be an overall element of success that is displayed and supported by the academic entity, the fan base, the athletic department and the players. Many programs have some of these elements, but not all of them. I want to learn what has gone into the emergence of UVA baseball as a perennial contender for a National Championship beyond the play on the field. In addition, I want to assist Coach O'Connor and the entire program develop several internal programs that will allow for continued success on the field while allowing Coach O'Connor and his staff to keep their focus on program development.
My hours during the duration of this experience will be difficult to set as a regular schedule. Coach O'Connor and the staff will be very busy working towards post-season play and I will be working on these various projects on my days off from the police department. My days off vary from week to week, so my hours will be hit or miss each week.
As of right now my compensation for the work being done is to be paid in training and experience. If the UVA baseball team hosts a Regional, then I will have access to the games. This will be an added bonus on my experience because I will be able learn what is involved in preparing for and managing a large scale collegiate event. I will have insight into field logistics, marketing, ticketing, on-field preparation, etc. Lastly, Coach O'Connor and I have had preliminary discussion about a longer term partnership beyond the conclusion of the Mentorship.
My main duties will be as follows:
